Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Program

Riannov Social Innovation Group runs breast cancer awareness and screening program to help women learn about breast self-examination and screening through mammography; further share this information with their friends and family. The initiative helps women detect changes in breast on their own and seek medical help for better handling of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in urban women and the second most common cancer in rural women in India. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) 2012 report, 47 % of the 1.5 lac reported breast cancer cases did not survive - this means, in India, 1 out of 2 women with breast cancer dies; in countries like USA, 80 % of the women with breast cancer survive because of regular breast self-examination, breast screening leading to early detection and treatment of breast cancer. In India, the major factors of concern and for a reduced survival rate are :

  • Delayed reporting/presentation of breast cancer for medical help
  • Lack of awareness and practice of breast self-examination to detect symptoms of breast cancer
  • Increasing incidence of breast cancer in the age group 25 to 40 years
  • Lack of deployment of affordable technologies for regular screening for breast cancer

As early detection is the best way to fight breast cancer and improve survival rate, it is advisable to do a regular breast self-examination (BSE) and breast screening.

Breast Self-Examination..Regular Screening..Early Detection..Improve Survival
